Women with very large, pendulous breasts may experience a variety of medical
problems as a result of their increased breast size, from back and neck
pain or skin irritation to skeletal deformities and breathing problems. Bra
straps may leave indentations in women’s shoulders. In addition, unusually
large breasts can make a woman, or teenage girl, feel extremely
self-conscious. Breast reduction, technically known as reduction mammaplasty,
is designed for such women.
The procedure removes excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin
from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. It
also reduces the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding
the nipple, and lifts the breasts. The goal is to achieve the
look of smaller, better-shaped breasts in proportion to the rest
of the body.
If you're considering breast reduction,
Dr. Messa can provide you with specific
information on how he would proceed in your particular situation.
