Patients coming in for injectable treatments like BOTOX® Cosmetic are often looking for quick improvement. It’s no wonder they want to know how soon they will see results. How long does BOTOX® Cosmetic take to work? This blog will answer that question by explaining how BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment works and the factors that may affect its onset.

How BOTOX® Cosmetic Works on Wrinkles

To understand why BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment results aren’t immediately apparent, you need to know how the neurotoxin works on wrinkles. Unlike dermal fillers, which instantly smooth away facial lines, BOTOX® Cosmetic targets the facial muscles that contribute to the formation of some wrinkles.

For example, forehead muscles create vertical lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) when you make facial expressions like frowning or squinting. BOTOX® Cosmetic works by blocking the activity of those muscles, so they no longer form lines. It works by binding to nerves that block signals to the muscles that tell them to contract. The neurotoxin needs time to bind to the nerves, which is why you won’t see results from your BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment right away.

When Will I See BOTOX® Cosmetic Results?

Patients often notice improvement within three days of their BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment. At this point, muscles are usually beginning to relax, and wrinkles may be less noticeable. However, the onset may vary depending on the dosage and treatment area.

For some patients, it might take up to a week to start noticing results. The delayed improvement doesn’t mean your treatment isn’t working. Most patients see their full improvement by two weeks after their procedure.

Factors That Impact BOTOX® Cosmetic Results

Numerous factors may play into when you see your BOTOX® Cosmetic results, including:

Your Dosage Amount

The amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic you receive can affect how quickly you see results and how pronounced your results are. While more neurotoxin may take effect faster, too much of a good thing can give you an unnatural frozen look. A more conservative approach is generally preferred when a patient begins BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment to ensure a natural outcome.

The Treatment Area

Different areas of the face may respond to treatment faster than others. For example, glabellar lines may react more quickly to BOTOX® Cosmetic injections than horizontal forehead lines. Fine lines in the outer corners of the eyes, known as crow’s feet, also tend to respond more quickly.

Your Skin Quality and Muscle Strength

Patients with thinner skin or less muscle mass may see BOTOX® Cosmetic take effect faster, as the neurotoxin may work more quickly on their muscles. Patients with stronger facial muscles may find that treatment results take longer or that they require a higher dosage to achieve their desired outcome.

Your BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment History

Some patients who have repeated BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments may find their results appear faster over time. Multiple treatments may have a cumulative effect on the targeted muscles so that patients may require less correction in subsequent treatment sessions.

How Long Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Last?

Once you see the results of your BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment, you will likely enjoy your improvements for three months or longer. Some patients find they can go up to six months between sessions without needing a touch-up, particularly if they have been undergoing treatments for a while. Doctors believe repeated injections of the neurotoxin may “train” muscles to remain relaxed, extending results.
