What is Labiaplasty?

Posted March 10, 2014 in Labiaplasty

Those who desire this type of cosmetic genital surgery seek to correct congential conditions or to improve physical discomfort due to an oversized labia. Some women also choose this procedure for aesthetic reasons.

Whispers about the labiaplasty procedure have turned into roars in recent months as the media has capitalized on the initial reactions of the public. Most people immediately question the ethics of surgery to alter such a private and physically sensitive area of the body and assume that the desire for labiaplasty could only stem from viewing pornographic or unrealistic images or from having an unhealthy body image.

While it is true that some undergo this procedure for aesthetic reasons, two-thirds of labiaplasty patients get the procedure primarily because of a functional problem, according to a 2008 medical research study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. Many women are born with an oversized or misshapen labia that can cause discomfort, chafing, and difficulty with intimacy. The labia skin can also become stretched from childbirth, intercourse, or athletic activities, which can also cause discomfort and embarrassment for some women.

Even with this type of motivation for the procedure, many are still hesitant to consider it because they fear they may not be happy with the result. According to a 2011 medical research study, also published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, overall patient satisfaction with labiaplasty is more than 91 percent.

Women considering this procedure primarily for aesthetic reasons should note that the shape, size, and color of female genetalia vary considerably among women, and there is not an exact “normal” labia appearance. The best candidates for labiaplasty are not considering this procedure to please another person, but to enhance their own confidence and quality of life.
